Experience the sensation of getting close to the mighty albatross, one of the world's largest flight birds with Albatross Encounter. Famous for whales and dolphins, Kaikoura is also arguably one of the world's most exciting arenas for pelagic (ocean going) birds. Within close proximity of the beautiful Kaikoura Peninsula, range a considerable array of albatross, petrels, shearwaters, terns, shags and gulls.
Albatross Encounter tours operate daily, three times a day in summer and twice daily in winter. They do have the ability to alter tour times for groups wanting alternative arrangements, subject to minimum numbers.
Normal tours to visit the pelagics off Kaikoura follow a predictable pattern. They have a duration of between 2 to 2.5 hours and cover the sea areas normally within 5 to 8 miles off shore. Trips cater not only for the serious birder, but also for those amongst us who are really only interested in seeing albatross.
Due to the interest shown by genuine birders anxious to see as many species as possible and perhaps seeing some of the less frequently sighted species and spending longer time on the ocean, further offshore, customised options are available too, just phone the above number to inquire.
Five varieties of the great albatross can be seen off Kaikoura, wandering albatross, Antipodean albatross, Gibson's albatross, northern royal albatross and southern royal albatross.
