Heralded in 1888 as 'the first permanent Art Gallery in the Dominion', Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki remains the largest art institution in New Zealand, with a collection numbering over 14,000 works.
These include major holdings of New Zealand historic, modern and contemporary art, and outstanding works by Maori and Pacific Island artists, as well as European painting, sculpture and print collections ranging in date from 1376 to the present day.
Free tours are available every day at 2.00pm. Taken by Gallery Docents these interactive 45 minute tours bring works of art alive for participants. Organised tours for groups are available by arrangement.
A public art gallery that was previously located within two buildings, the main gallery and the new gallery, it exhibits work from its collection along with a programme of national and international touring exhibitions. The main gallery (cnr of Wellesley and Kitchener Sts) is now closed for development. Exhibitions and events continue at the New Gallery. Works from the collection are on show in the ground floor collection displays. Upstairs special exhibitions will feature works by prominent New Zealand and international artists.
For that special gift or memento, the Gallery Shop is the ideal place to visit. A unique and exclusive range of New Zealand and New Zealand art related merchandise, including books and cards.
Entry to the ground floor displays are free.
Admission charges apply for special exhibitions.
Open daily 10.00am-5.00pm, except for Christmas Day and Easter Friday.
