New Zealand professional fly fishing guides Back Country Trout will guide in the South Island of New Zealand for wild brown and rainbow trout. Allow Kevin Payne or one of his guides take you on a guided fly fishing vacation to one their 'special spots'. You will love the combination of large trout, uncrowded rivers and striking scenery.
If you're looking for a "once in a lifetime" fishing vacation then you will love what the scenic Central South Island has to offer. Back Country Trout fly fishing guides is based out of the Timaru / Fairlie area which is 2 hours south of Christchurch International Airport. This region, in the heart of the South Island, has many fly fishing opportunities from the Aoraki / Mt. Cook rivers in the Mackenzie high country with their feisty rainbow and brown trout to the resident and sea-run brown trout of the lowland rivers and spring creeks.
Kevin Payne is your NZPFGA (New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association) registered guide which means you get a high standard, quality flyfishing experience. Kevin grew up in the Central South Island / Mackenzie District and shares years of experience with his guests. Kevin, specialises in spotting fish with a trained eye and puts you in the best position to try and fool these crafty trout with nymphs, dry flies, or emergers. Most rivers are accessed by 4WD and involve some walking, the degree depending on your fitness! Driftboat fishing is an option to get into those hard to access areas, or if mobility is an issue floating down a river can save a lot of walking.
Our main trout fly fishing season runs from 1 October-30 April though some fishing is available all year around. At Back Country Trout, we specialise in making an itinerary tailored to suit you and your holiday plans. Packages or days can start from Christchurch airport or hotel if needed. Back Country Trout works closely with top quality Bed & Breakfasts and farmstays to ensure a good rest after your day. We also offer a private secluded shepherd's hut for comfortable overnight stays and flyfishing at the front door. A guided day on the river includes all equipment and flies, riverside lunch and transport via comfortable 4wd.
We have additional guides available to guide larger groups.
We look forward to hearing from you and helping you plan a vacation of a lifetime.

Comments / Reviews of Back Country Trout
In January of 2007 my wife and I enjoyed two(2) days of guided flyfishing with Kevin Payne on the South Island. We have fished many places in the world, however, our experiences in stalking and catching numerous large brown trout on dry flies in a crystal clear stream in the "Southern Alps" was extraordinary.
