Canterbury Museum has a collection of over two million items. Its collections have engaged and delighted visitors from all over the world for more than 130 years. The Museum has themed galleries, including, Mâori, Antarctic, Transport, Geology, Costume, Furniture, Early Canterbury Settlers, Geology, Bird Hall, Asian Arts and much more.
Canterbury Museum offers an ever-changing array of special and touring exhibitions. From silk to spiders, reggae to Roman glass, huia to hanging coffins, these diverse shows make every visit different and delightful.
Visit Iwi Tawhito and Ngâ Taonga galleries and see untouched New Zealand through the eyes of its first people – the tangata whenua. Glimpse Aotearoa in the time of the giant moa, majestic totara forests and rivers of pounamu.
See how the early European Canterbury settlers lived and built the most English city outside England on the swamp and gravel of the Canterbury Plains. Take a stroll through the Christchurch Street where Victorian ladies order whale-bone corsets and the men puff on ivory pipes. Look for the Penny Farthing bicycle and the coast-to-coast coach from the 1870s in the Transport Gallery.
Canterbury Museum offers free guided tours every Tuesday and Thursday at 3.30 pm. These depart from the Museum Foyer and give a general introduction the Museum and its collection.
General entry to the Museum is free; donations are appreciated.
Discovery entry is $2.00 per person; free for children under three.

Open Everday 9am - 5pm (May - September)
9am - 5:30pm (October - April)
(Closed Christmas Day)
