Carter Observatory is located in the majestic Botanical gardens in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand and is easily accessed via the cable car from the main shopping area or while enjoying the Garden's many walks. Carter Observatory is the National Observatory of Aoteroa and a frequent favourite for locals and visitors alike.
The Observatory has a Planetarium, visitor gift shop, lecture theatre, many static displays, plus a range of telescopes, all available to the public.
The best times to visit are at midday and 7pm, that's when crowds are low and viewing times are optimal for looking through the large telescope.
The highlight of visiting the observatory is the 360 degree panoramic Planetarium show. It's just under an hour long, and presented by a real astronomer who can answer any questions you may have. Once your eyes adjust to the dark, you'll journey through the Southern night sky, starting from the famous Southern Cross.
The Observatory is open each day (except Christmas day). Weather dependant programmes include Daily Solar Viewing and the Southern Night Sky telescope viewing.
