The Cave Rider excursion, out of Tutukaka, is a two and a half hour combination of thrilling ocean ride, awesome scenery and unique natural history that could only happen in New Zealand. Cave Rider is a 40 foot jet powered, exhilarating adventure boat, designed and built in NZ to safely undertake open ocean passages.
The Poor Knights Islands, 23 km off the NE coast of Northland, at Tutukaka, are a scenic wonderland of caves, arches, tunnels and soaring cliffs. Riko Riko cave is the world's largest sea cave. The islands are a total reserve, above and below the water and are free of predators and introduced species. This is where the tuatara survives, the only breeding place of the Buller's Shearwater, home to gannets, and a myriad of other sea and bird life. Truly a natural history Wonderland, set in absolutely breathtaking scenery.
The commentary covers all of this, plus the tragic and fascinating Maori history, and unique natural history of this total reserve. The Poor Knights Islands never fail to enchant.
Year round, dolphins and whales and bronze whaler sharks are spotted at the Knights. In summer minke whales, Brydes whales, southern right and even a basking whale shark stop at the Knights. The sting rays are famous for their mating during March when they stack in their hundreds in the archways that dominate the underwater landscape of the Knights.
Allow 2.5 hours. Half an hour for kit-up and loading, half an hour to the Islands, one hour quietly exploring caves and arches, and half an hour home.
There is a limit to 25 passengers per trip and no children under 5.
