Located on the main street of Takaka is the Golden Bay Museum and Gallery. The museum houses some unique Maori and European artifacts.
Highlights of the museum include a number of Maori taonga (treasures), some pre-dating the European settlement of New Zealand.
The diorama, depicting 1642, when a Maori waka overpowered one of Abel Tasman's small boats in Golden Bay and four Dutch sailors were lost is a must-see.
The Golden Bay Museum also has one of the largest collections of shells from New Zealand's unique Powelliphanta spp. carnivorous land snail.
The Golden Bay Gallery, located in the Historic Post Office Building, specialises in regional art and craft. You will find pottery, jewelery, prints, paintings, woodcraft and giftware to remember your visit to this beautiful area.
Open Daily 10am - 4pm
(Closed Sundays in Winter)
"For the best museum in community endeavors, the tiny town of Takaka must take the prize...a national class museum, gallery and archive."
