The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is New Zealand's premier contemporary art museum and home to the collection of modernist filmmaker and kinetic sculptor Len Lye. The gallery is committed to developing a contemporary art museum that is recognised internationally for its global vision and special commitment to the Pacific region.

The gallery maintains and develops a contemporary art collection and presents a diverse programme of exhibitions and events. Through programmes that extend beyond its walls, the gallery also aims to foster the development and interpretation of contemporary art by developing new audiences and new possibilities for artists within contemporary culture.

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery holds a small but significant collection of contemporary visual art works. The Gallery's long-held policy is to acquire works that represent current ideas and are significant in the development of the contemporary visual arts in the Pacific Rim. The collection is intended to provide a usable resource for the Gallery's exhibition and education programmes rather than a repository for art historical artefacts.

In practice, the Gallery focuses on collecting work by emerging and mid-career New Zealand artists and artists from the Pacific Rim. It acquires works that, while characteristic of the artists' output, are distinctive, are of exceptional quality or have some special relevance to the Gallery or the Pacific region. The resulting works from the Gallery's collection are in frequent demand for exhibitions throughout New Zealand and overseas.

10.30am – 5pm daily
(Closed Christmas Day and Good Friday)

Admission to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is free, although visitor donations enable the Gallery to ensure the ongoing provision of dynamic programmes.
