Kapiti Island is an internationally renowned sanctuary for New Zealand native birds, native forest and New Zealand wildlife and marine reserve. Kapiti Island is home to the world's largest population of little spotted kiwi plus many other endangered species of New Zealand birds. The Island is accessible to both overnight and day visitors. Experience pristine native forest, guided nature walks, conservation education, Maori cultural elements and story telling, family hospitality and great meals are all part of the Kapiti Island experience.
For over a hundred years now Kapiti Island has been managed by the New Zealand Government in order to protect its flora and fauna. As a 'Nature Reserve' it remains the most protected of public lands, and today the sheer abundance and diversity of birdlife gives testimony to the decades of careful management, good planning and much hard work. Kapiti Island stands as 'the jewel in the crown of New Zealand's conservation estate' as it provides the necessary 'pest and predator' free environment for many of New Zealand's most endangered bird species.
Sometimes the more interactive of our native birds like the kaka and weka can be quite demanding for your attention. Other species like the takahe, saddleback, stitchbird, North Island robin, and little spotted kiwi can be seen in their natural habitat. More abundant native species such as the kereru, kakariki, tui, bellbird, royal spoonbill etc... should also be seen during your visit.
Kapiti Nature Lodge offers visitors a comfortable, relaxing nature experience in one of the world's great conservation environments. Activities available from the lodge include a range of walks, including coast walks (where you could see the NZ fur seal), bushwalks for forest birds, or take the hill to a great lookout spot across Cook Strait. Good photo opportunities occur almost everywhere, as the abundant birdlife should entertain throughout. Kapiti Marine Reserve, immediately adjacent to the lodge offers fabulous swimming, snorkelling or scuba diving.
The boat journey from the Kapiti Boating Club (at Paraparaumu Beach) takes about 15 minutes on one of the two ferries licensed to take passengers to the Island. Boarding the ferries (MV Te Aihe or MV Kiwi Express) in the car park allows for both dry feet and good security.
