Come and enjoy a relaxing day cruising along the Mokau River, aboard the MV Glenroyal with Mokau River Tours. The Mokau River has a rich history and the banks are lined with fascinating scenery including; outstanding coastal forest, wildlife and whitebait fishing jetties.

Ian Whittaker is Mokau’s local historian and the skipper of MV Glenroyal. He will tell you the history of the river, which is as long as the river itself (second longest in the North Island). Listen to commentary about life on and around the river including stories about ferry-men, bootleggers, and local Maori tribes as you cruise pass some of the best native trees in New Zealand.

Enjoy a nice hot drink as the stunning vistas pass you by. Freshly cooked morning/ afternoon tea includes Belinda Whittaker's delicious scones, which are a real treat.

The whitebait season goes from the second week in August to the last day in November and the Mokau River is at its most active. There are over a hundred whitebait fishermen and ladies dotting the river banks. From the MV GlenRoyal you can see all the action, talk to the fisherman, and if you want, enjoy an amazing whitebait fritter. All from the warmth and safety of the largest ship on the river. No where else can you see whitebait fishing like this.

The MV GlenRoyal is able a carry 60 people with ease; she is safe, stable and warm. The M.V. GlenRoyal has a nice warm cabin that can seat 30 people, a back deck that can be enclosed, two toilets and an elevated viewing deck where you can enjoy the sun. (This deck is accessible by ladder steps.)

The MV GlenRoyal departs from the Boundary Creek Pier, 4 Km up Te Mahoe Rd on the North side of the Mokau River. The discovery voyage will take approximately 3 hours, finishing back at the pier and car park facility.

Departure time changes with the tide. Booking is essential.

A most relaxing few hours on a comfortable boat, with enjoyable scenery, extremely friendly and knowledgeable operators, a delicious devonshire tea with the scones freshly cooked as you watch on board. Our sincere thanks for very memorable occasion which we will not hesitate to recommend to others.

This was a fabulous trip. We have been on eco river trips in Australia and our trip on the Mokau was by far the best we have ever done. We highly recommend it. Our hosts knowledge of the history of the area was really interesting - great for overseas guests. We would like to do it again in September when the Kowhai are flowering all up the river.
