Ohau, as part of the Ohau Range in the Main Divide, is endowed with reliable snowfall and fine weather. Ohau is serviced by a double chairlift, a platter and a snow mat. The main trails are groomed regularly.

‘The Boulevard’ offers learners and intermediates an easy and fun skiing or snowboarding experience from the top of the chairlift down to the base facilities. The chairlift also provides access to a wide variety of slopes suitably challenging for experts and exciting for intermediates.

A very gentle slope, serviced by new snow mat, is ideal for children and beginners. The platter lift is more exciting for the developing beginner.

From the 9.6km access road, the views up the valley to Mount Cook and overlooking the lake are spectacular with snatched glimpses of the snow field now and again before opening up to the full panorama on arrival at the car park. Ohau is where people are important. If you have ever had a lesson at Ohau you will know that even though your lesson is over your instructor will still be reminding you across the slopes to keep your body facing down the mountain or to keep your hands forward as you pass by - the lesson didn’t stop after you had paid for your hours instruction. Because we’re small, we’re a personal place.

Ohau Ski Area is 320km, 3½ hours south of Christchurch and 275km, 3 hours north of Dunedin. Turn off Main highway 8 between Twizel and Omarama. The Lake Ohau Lodge, situated at the mountain base, is 42km (30 minutes) from Twizel and Omarama. The Snow Field is only 9.6km, 15 minutes from the Lake Ohau Lodge, via a good access road.

Staying at the Lake Ohau Lodge will complete a unique and truly memorable South Island skiing experience. The convenience of being 15 minutes from the snow field at the bottom of the access road is hard to beat. Drop your gear and head for the hot outside spa pools where you can sip on a gluhwein and take in the dramatic sunset as Mount Cook turns pink.

The restaurant which also overlooks the lake has long tables where couples or families can dine together. There is the option of an early dining time for small children if families wish. The open fire, fine food and high country hospitality set the scene.
