Okarito is a small, peaceful village on the western sea coast of the South Island. Okarito Lagoon is New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland covering 3240 hectares of shallow open water surrounded by magnificent Kahikatea & Rimu rainforests. Kayaks are the best way to explore the Okarito river delta and paddle deep into the heart of the forest. A clear day will provide awe-inspiring views of Mt. Cook, Mt. Tasman and the Southern Alps. Okarito Nature Tours has kayaks and trips to suit everyone. Previous kayaking experience is not necessary.
The Lagoon is a birdwatchers paradise. It is the main feeding ground for the white herons or Kotuku (Egretta alba). The herons nest along with the little Shags and Royal Spoon Bills in nearby Waitangi-Roto nature reserve.Over 70 other bird species have been recorded in the area.
Okarito Nature Tours provide a safe, enjoyable kayaking experience on Okarito Lagoon for people of most ages and fitness levels. You will be provided with; personal hospitality, full navigational and safety briefing, life jackets, splash guards, water-proof bags and a complementary map, which includes an ecological and bird identification guide book. You can choose between Freedom Rentals or a Guided Trip (minimum 2 people).
Only 10km off the main highway, Okarito is about 25 minutes drive north of Franz Josef Glacier. Look for the turn off between Lakes Mapourika and Wahapo.
