The Southern Alps of the South Island are host to a number of superb ski resorts. One of the most beautiful and best value is Rainbow Ski Area near St Arnaud, high in the north of this great mountain chain within the world famous Nelson/Marlborough lifestyle region. Reaching a height of over 1760 metres, Rainbow captures regular winter snow, complemented by extensive snow making, all superbly groomed to create a stunning winter playground.

The wide, uncrowded slopes provide superb terrain for beginner and intermediates while advanced skiers can challenge themselves in the high powder runs and chutes. Boarders love the varied terrain, jumps, bumps and drops.. With a north easterly aspect it is regularly sunny and warm.

Overlooking Nelson Lakes National Park with its extensive beech forest and beautiful Lake Rotoiti, the views from the top of the T-bar are spectacular.

Rainbow Ski Area is situated about 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Nelson airport, 1 hour 20 minutes drive from Blenhiem, 1 hour 40 minutes from Picton and 1 hour 20 minutes drive from Murchison.

Rainbow Ski Area offers a full range of ski and snowboard rental.

The ski area is serviced by St Arnaud Village which is on the edge of the Nelson Lakes National Park. The ski area is a 40 minute drive from St Arnaud along State Highway 63 (SH63), past the Top House corner. Turn right into Wairau - Hanmer Springs Hydro Rd and drive along the 12km sealed road. The road passes through there fords before reaching the mountain road at Six Mile Creek. The mountain road winds up alongside Six Mile Creek through native beach forest and then turns up toward the ski area at the tree line.
