The Taieri Gorge Train is Dunedin's prestige tourist train operating from Dunedin's historic Railway Station.
Departing daily (except Christmas day) it takes you on a journey through the rugged and spectacular Taieri River Gorge, across wrought iron viaducts and through tunnels carved by hand more than 100 years ago.
With full commentary, photographic stops, comfortable heating in winter and on board refreshments the train offers year round, all-weather entertainment.
You can make the return journey to Pukerangi, or Middlemarch, or use the train as the one leg of your journey to or from Queenstown and Central Otago on our connecting `Track & Trail' coach.
The standard trip to Pukerangi is four hours return and the longer trip to Middlemarch is five hours and 55 minutes.
There are two types of carriages. Most of the carriages are the heritage carriages built 1915-1920s. These are fully restored and have padded comfortable seats, most of which flip over to face the direction of travel. They are warm and full of character. he others are more modern. Built in the 1990s they feature large windows, seating fixed around tables and air-conditioning. These are better suited to big groups of people. Most carriages have toilets and you will have at least one window seat per couple. There is also a snack bar carriage which sells a range of cafe style food.
Booking is advised, especially for the busy months (October - April).
