In October 2005 The Nelson Provincial Museum opened on part of the original Town Acre site, which was once home to New Zealand's first museum - The Literary and Scientific Institute of Nelson (1842). Town Acre 445 is the gateway/waharoa for our community to explore and reflect on their cultural heritage and the natural history of the region.
The 1800 square metre space is designed to tell the stories and display the treasures of Nelson City and Tasman District. The design maximises public areas for exhibition and education.
The Museum holds over 1.4 million treasures on behalf of the regional communities of Nelson and Tasman. The Museum holds over 1.4 million treasures on behalf of the regional communities of Nelson and Tasman.
The triumphs and tragedies of individuals and communities collected during the past 160 years are recorded within the assembled cultural and scientific material relating to the development of our region.
Open hours are 10.00 am - 5.00 pm Monday to Friday, 10.00 am - 4.30 pm Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Closed Christmas day and Good Friday.
