Internationally acclaimed and unique to New Zealand, Waterways Boating Safaris guided boating adventure is more than just a scenic tour. Experience the beautiful and sheltered waterways of the Marlborough Sounds whilst enjoying the thrill of driving a boat independently and in the company of others. Fun, freedom and incredible scenery. From the tree covered hills to the clear blue waters the scenery is stunning. Bring a camera to capture these amazing views. Combine this with the scarcity of people on the beaches and you may feel you are the first to discover this land of natural history.
Learning to handle the boat is quick and easy for a first timer. You will soon set off gliding across the water to explore numerous bays and hidden coves within the 1200 kilometres of the Marlborough Sounds coastline.
Visit mussel farms and learn how greenlip mussels are grown. Stop up close alongside a mussel farm to see how the mussel lines are seeded and harvested.
Land on an unspoiled beach where there are no roads, jetties or well worn tourist tracks. Enjoy a swim or a walk through an ancient forest to view a 1000 year old Rimu tree which evolved 130 million years ago. Experience a native forest that existed long before man discovered New Zealand.
Dolphins are visitors to the area. Blue Penguins are regularly seen out on the water along with Herons, Oyster Catchers, Stormy Petrels Shearwaters and Terns. Often Gannets are to be spotted diving from great heights in their ceaseless search for a fishy meal. Shags nest on coastal trees, dive deep for their daily food, and bask on a sunlit perch to dry their wings.
Their courtesy coach can collect you from your accommodation or i-sites in either Havelock or Picton. For the independent traveller, their departure base at Ohingaroa Bay and it is a pleasant half hour’s drive from Picton or Havelock, and on route to or from Nelson (one and half hours).
