New Zealand's first zoo, Wellington Zoo was founded in 1906 when a young lion was presented to Wellington city by the Bostock and Wombwell Circus. Zoos have changed drastically over the last hundred years and Wellington Zoo is committed to a future in conservation education by bringing animals and people closer together.

Wellington Zoo is home to more than 500 animals. The animals live in enclosures designed to be as natural and similar to the environment they would inhabit in the wild. Some of our animals live in mixed-species enclosures.

There are so many animals that we can't list them all here but to give you an idea, here is just a few of the species...giraffes, lions, cheetahs, kangaroos, otters, red pandas, zebra, baboons, lemurs, kiwis, keas, emus, geckos, chimpanzees, spider monkeys, tuataras, meerkats, and tigers.

Looking for a truly unique animal experience? Come and meet some of Wellington Zoo's most beautiful and endangered creatures with Close Encounters. Would you like to hand feed a red panda? Hand feed this gentle giant and assist with medical training? Take your chances with a big cat? Find out what a Cheetah smells like, how their fur feels and what they sound like when they purr? To maintain the intimate nature of the Close Encounters, the maximum group size per encounter is 2 people.

Wellington Zoo is open 9.30am - 5.00pm every day, except Christmas Day.
Last admission is at 4.15pm.

Please Note - Children under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult.

Wellington Zoo is quite a small zoo but we still managed to spend 2 hours walking around. The otters, baboons and sun bears were my favourites. Unfortunately the chimps were hiding out on the other side of their enclosure so we couldn't see them very well. The price was $15 for adults and $7.50 for children, so it won't break the bank. Buses run frequently from the central city, so it's easy to get there too. I also liked the layout of the zoo, which is an easy to follow circuit, rather than a maze like some other zoos.
