Whakapapa, on the north-western slopes of Mt Ruapehu, is New Zealand’s largest developed ski area. Within the 550 hectare (1360 acres) boundary there is excellent skiing and boarding for all levels.

Whakapapa boasts all services and amenities that you would expect to find at any international ski area. Happy Valley is a complete learner’s area that is separate to the main ski area so beginners can progress in a safe environment. If you would like to learn to ski or snowboard, our cheap Discover packages are the ideal choice. They include a beginner Lift Pass, Rentals and a Lesson.

There are 30 groomed trails and a huge variety of off-piste areas which intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders will love. There are 23 lifts - 2 quad and 4 double, 4 T-Bars, as well as platters and learner’s lifts.

As snowboarding and freeskiing have literally reached new heights, we are catering to these riders by building special features to keep them entertained. There is a Halfpipe as well as a beginner to intermediate Terrain Park.

For non-skiers who don’t want to miss out on playing in the snow we will again have a tobogganing and tubing area for your sliding pleasure!

Whakapapa has joined with nearby Turoa ski field to become one commercial entity known as Mt Ruapehu - the largest snow sports area in the Southern Hemisphere. Shuttle buses run between the fields and you can enjoy the two resorts on the one daily/season pass. Make sure you don’t limit yourself to just one ski area!

Whakapapa Ski Area is 6kms (10 mins) from Whakapapa Village. The access road to the ski area is by far the best in New Zealand. It is fully sealed all the way and is suitable for Campervans. On occasion chains are required, but we can fit them for you while you stay warm inside your vehicle for an extremely reasonable price. If you would prefer not to drive yourself there are several local businesses that offer a transport service from Whakapapa and Ohakune villages up to the ski areas.
