Hilltop Backpackers at Papatowai sits on a hill 50 meters above Papatowai and scenic Tahakopa Bay. An easy 125km drive from Dunedin and 111km from Invercargill, Papatowai is a small sea side village with a large number of the houses being holiday cribs.

There is one shop which sells a good range of foodstuffs plus alcohol and petrol. There are several good tracks along the coastline and through native bush the most adventurous being a two day trek which offers some great scenery.

The hostel has been extensively renovated and now offers a very high standard of accommodation. The views from the hostel are stunning with the Pacific Ocean to one side and a long valley comprising farm land and native bush to the other. Both sunrise and sunset have to be seen to be believed.

The hostel sleeps 10 people in all. There are 2 double rooms with linen and electric blankets (for the out of season visitors) and 2 dorms sleeping 3 people in each. Two bathrooms are also available, one of which features a large old fashioned bath tub for those in need of a long relaxing soak.

In the summer time the conservatory is a great place to relax with a good book and at cooler times of the year settle down in front of a cosy log fire in the living area.
