Translated from Maori, Koanui means a large and happy place to meet and stay, and hosts Des and Francey make every effort to live up to this. The Koanui Lodge & Backpackers complex includes the hostel building which is a century old dwelling originally built as a guest house and has been refurbished. The lodge was purpose built in 2003 to provide spacious, comfortable, modern accommodation for visitors to the area. It is well set up to accommodate group bookings and can be booked for exclusive use.

The Koanui Lodge & Backpackers complex is situated 5 minutes walk of the town center, a supermarket, Post Office, movie theatre, swimming pool, gymnasium, Information Centre, railway station and the bus depot. The lodge provides modern studio style en suite rooms with TVs and a spacious 6 bed dormitory. The hostel offers standard double and twin rooms with TVs, plus 3, 4 and 6 bed dormitories.
